Susa gorilla group had 42 individuals: 4 silverbacks, 5 black backs, 12 adult females, 3 sub adult females, 1 sub adult male, 2 non adult female, 2 juveniles and 13 babies but recently the group got spilt into two families. Before the split when you reach this group, the first thing you noted was that there were gorillas everywhere. The Number of Gorillas remains in this family are 29 Gorilla while the new gorilla family group is Karisimbi named after the Rwanda's highest volcanoe. Rwanda gorilla tours can now be orginised for the new group Karisimbi. Susa group that the American researcher Dian Fossey studied, and is the largest of the habituated family. Dian Fossey had set up a research centre high in the Virunga volcanic mountains midway between Karisimbi and Bisoke, naming it the Karisoke Research centre. She is buried there next to her beloved mountain gorilla Digit. Her cemetery has now become a worldwide attraction. A guide leads the strenuous three-hour trek to her conservative centre and to the the susa family. You will need a good six hours to do the round trip, allowing time to explore.
The other gorilla groups are smaller and tend to be less physically intensive to visit. The exhilarating climb to the gorilla’s natural habitat of shady bamboo forest offers fantastic views in all directions, before the trackers are immersed in the mysterious intimacy of the rainforest, alive with the calls of colourful birds and the chattering of rare golden monkey. Nothing can prepare one for the impact of encountering a fully-grown silverback gorilla, up to three times the size of an average man, yet remarkably peaceable and tolerant of human visitors.
