Line up for Miss Rwanda 2009Tanzania hosts beauty contest to crown Miss East Africa.
Beauty queens from East Africa took part in the Miss East Africa pageant in Tanzania on Saturday night (December 19).

The highly anticipated event brought together 28 girls from 14 countries forming the East Africa block including Kenya, Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda, Madagascar, Reunion, Mauritius, Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Comoros, Djibuti, Seychelles, Somalia and hosts Tanzania.
Contestants competed in a total of three categories; creative wear, beach wear and evening wear.

The event was held in Dar-es-salaam's Mlimani City Complex where audience members cheered for their favourite contestant on stage.
Participants were judged on their intellect, modelling ability and how well they answered questions from a panel of judges.
Miss France 2000 Sonia Rolland Uwitonze, Rwanda Television's Kije Mugisha Rwamasirabo, tourism and tour operator Manzi Kayihura, Hooters' Vice President Kate Cole and Christine Tuyisenge of Rwanda Women Empowerment were the judges.

The coveted crown went to Rwandan contestant, Cynthia Akazuba, who was handed the crown by 2008 winner, Burundian Claudia Niyonzima.
The Miss East Africa competition is in its fourth year, and is used to promote and encourage cooperation between countries.
Miss East Africa is expected to travel across the region to learn about the most important causes faced by the people in the region.
Akazuba took home several prizes including a Range Rover worth 165,000 U.S. dollars.
Rwanda also had a winner in Annet Mahoro, who was voted "Miss Popular."
